Do you control your time or does it control you? This is a question I have to ask clients over and over when we are working on time management. The key is to develop a realistic plan for each week. You need to have a way to write down your plans for the week. I am “old school” and have a planner the size of a three-ring binder and I actually write in all that I will be doing for the week. It doesn’t matter what you use, paper planner, blackberry, Outlook, or some other way, just be sure to use it!
On Saturday or Sunday, write in exactly the way you expect your week to go. In detail!! What time are you going to get up, eat breakfast, commute, meetings (start and finish), return calls, exercise, family time, relax, etc. Then, as you go through the week, write down what time and what activities really occurred. Maybe you underestimated all those commute times leaving you stressed and frazzled trying to make it to the next appointment. Maybe time for exercise just slipped away. Are there too many late nights at work which have eliminated the family meal times?
Once you have discovered the reality of how you use your time, you will be able to plan a realistic schedule that won’t leave you stressed out and tired.
I would also like to recommend a book to help you get control. CrazyBusy: Overstretched, Overbooked, and About to Snap! Strategies for Handling Your Fast-Paced Life Edward M. Hallowell M.D. is the author and offers some great insights and ideas in this book. Since summer is time to read at the beach or maybe in a hammock, this is a great book to have with you. On page 5 , he writes, “ Being too busy, which can seem necessary and unavoidable, can become a habit so entrenched that it leads you to postpone or cut short what really matters to you, making you a slave to a lifestyle you don’t really like but can’t escape.” Take back your life today! It is finite, so why not enjoy the ride?
